'It's about donors, not dollars'

More than 100 LaGrange College friends and alumni came together this week to support students and make GivingTuesday 2019 a success.

“We are very appreciative of everyone who participated this year,” said Trevor Lane ’13, Assistant Director of the LaGrange College Fund, who spearheaded the campaign. “I’m very thankful for all those who chose to give during this season of buying.”

Almost 130 donors made gifts totaling more than $28,000 to the college’s campaign. The donated funds will provide needed resources, but the number of people who gave also makes an impact. Lane said participation at any level is important. Volunteer Rhett Yates M’99 echoed that sentiment, saying, “It’s about donors, not dollars.”

“I’m very excited that alumni participation is up, and that is exciting,” said Yates, who is President of the college’s Alumni Association. “We will continue to educate our alumni (about giving), get the word out there and get others excited.”

Of the 128 donors to support the college for GivingTuesday, 64 were alumni. In total, 338 alumni have given back to the college since July 1.

“Participation of alumni donors is an important factor when the college is considered for grants by charitable organizations and evaluated by entities like U.S. News,” said Rebecca Roth Nicks, Vice President for External Relations.

If the college receives 1,140 alumni gifts by the end of its fiscal year—June 30, 2020—it will mark approximately 15% of all LC alumni giving back, a benchmark many organizations look for when assessing the college, noted Lane.

“A gift of any amount counts toward this goal and goes further by opening up great opportunities for students on the Hill,” he said.

This year’s GivingTuesday campaign was bolstered by a “challenge” from supporters Shearon ’72 and Taylor Glover. The couple made a $20,000 gift intended to motivate others to join the effort, so the college extended its campaign into “GivingWednesday,” which added dozens of contributions.

“We are so thankful to Shearon and Taylor Glover for making this challenge gift, allowing us to extend GivingTuesday and bringing in more donors to help our students,” Nicks said.

The gifts made for the campaign, like all those made to the LaGrange College Fund, help sustain scholarships and financial aid for students; on-campus resources like centers for free tutoring, academic coaching and career development; and needed classroom tools. Donor funding offsets thousands of dollars in tuition costs for each student during their time on the Hill.

GivingTuesday launched in 2012 to promote philanthropy and volunteerism. Since then, “it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity” according to the GivingTuesday website.
